By Way of Necessity December 1, 2006 - January 27, 2007 KEYS THAT FIT, 2312 Telegraph Avenue, Oakland, CA 94612 Opening: Friday, December 1, 2006, 5pm Closing Reception:
By Way of Necessity is a new site-specific sound and light installation by Joshua Churchill at the window/store-front gallery KEYS THAT FIT in Oakland, CA. Churchill has boarded the windows of this once active lock and key shop as if it had just "closed for business" and has animated the space behind it with speakers, tactile transducers, and reactive lighting elements. The sounds emanating from the installation consist of some based on the history of the space, as well as waves of subsonic tones that vibrate the boards and glass. KEYS THAT FIT is located next door to Mama Buzz Café in one of Oakland's evolving arts districts and is viewable only from the sidewalk or street. As certain aspects emerge slowly over time, the installation is best experienced a few minutes (or more) at a time after dusk (so dress warmly)... |
